Using colas to make bbq sauce is a great way to add sweetness and unique flavors. The root beer flavor comes through in this sauce but is not overwhelming. We liked it best for coating ribs and pulled pork but it also works great as a dipping sauce.

  • Ketchup
  • Root Beer  ~ Use your favorite brand.
  • V8 Juice
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • Liquid Smoke
  • Granulated Garlic
  • Chili Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Kosher Salt
  • Black Pepper
  • Brown Sugar
  • Ground Chili Flakes

🔥 Step By Step Directions

  1. In a medium sauce pan, add the ketchup, root beer, V 8 juice, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, granulated garlic, chili powder, granulated onion, salt and pepper. 
  2. Whisk together and cook over medium heat, stirring often. When sauce starts to bubble, whisk in the brown sugar. Continue to cook, whisking until brown sugar is dissolved. Lower to simmer and cook 5 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and stir in the ground chili flakes.

4. Pour into jars and cover. Cool to room temperature and refrigerate until ready to use.

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups ketchup
  • 12 ounces root beer
  • ½ cup V8 juice
  • ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1 teaspoon granulated garlic
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon coarse black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground chili flakes

Instructions

  • Add ketchup, root beer, V8 juice, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, garlic, salt, pepper, chili powder and onion powder to a sauce pan.
  • Whisk together and cook over medium heat. Stir often until sauce begins to bubble.
  • Add the brown sugar and continue to whisk until brown sugar is dissolved.
  • Lower to simmer and cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove from heat and stir in ground chili flakes.
  • Pour into jars, cover and cool to room temperature. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
