Beer Brats
Beer Brats with mushrooms and onions are a great addition to your next cookout! These flavorful German sausages are simmered with beer and onions and then slow grilled to perfection.
Bratwurst are German sausages most often made of pork, veal or beef. They can come uncooked or fully cooked. Adjust your cooking time accordingly. Brats are always a favorite for our family cookouts and they are super easy to grill.

How to Grill Beer Brats:
- Place bratwurst in a pan.
- Pour 2 beers over the brats, we used Bud Light but any beer will work.
- Slice onion and garlic and place over the brats.
- Bring to a boil and remove from heat. Allow to sit for 30 minutes.
- Remove brats and onions from beer and place on a grill pan with sliced mushrooms.
- Brush olive oil over brats and drizzle the remaining oil over the mushrooms. Season mushrooms with salt and pepper.
- Place over indirect heat on the grill and cook for 15- 20 minutes or until brats reach 160° internal temperature with a digital thermometer.
- Remove from heat and serve on buns with desired toppings.
Mushrooms are not the traditional topping for brats but we were making Grilled Mushroom & Swiss Burgers and had to give it a try. It was a definite hit with the crowd.
Best Toppings for Beer Brats:
Traditionally brats are served with mustard and sometimes sauerkraut. Ketchup and pickle relish are our favorites.

Beer Brats
Ingredients
- 4 Bratwurst
- 2 cans beer we used Bud Light
- 2 large onions thinly sliced
- 2 garlic cloves sliced
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt divided use
- 2 teaspoon black pepper divided use
- 8 oz mushrooms thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons olive oil divided use
- 4 buns
Instructions
- Place bratwurst in a pan and cover with beer.
- Top with sliced onions, garlic, 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of pepper.
- Bring to a boil. Remove from heat and allow to sit 30 minutes.
- Remove brats and onions from beer and place on a grill pan with sliced mushrooms.
- Brush brats with oil and use remaining oil to drizzle over mushrooms.
- Season mushrooms with remaining salt and pepper.
- Place over indirect heat and cook for 15-20 minutes with the grill closed. Internal temperature of brats should reach 160°.
- Remove from grill and serve on buns with mushrooms, onions and any desired toppings.
