Prepare a grill fire to 350° using hickory or pecan for smoke flavor.
Pat the roast dry with paper towels and place on a rimmed baking sheet or cutting board.
Coat with olive oil on all sides and sprinkle steak rub all over the roast, pressing it into the meat.
Cook roast over indirect fire with the grill closed for 1 hour 15 minutes.
Brush with bbq sauce and continue to cook until roast reaches desired doneness. We used a digital meat thermometer cooking to about 200°.
Remove to a cutting board and tent with foil. Rest 15 minutes before slicing.
Store sliced venison in an airtight container in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 4 days.
Reheat in a skillet coated with olive oil over medium heat. Add additional bbq sauce if desired, cooking until heated through.
