- 1 ½ pounds 80/20 ground beef
- 2 tablespoons steak rub
- 4 slices American cheese
- 4 pretzel buns
- burger sauce
- lettuce
- cooked onion rings
Measure the pretzel buns and make the burger patties just slightly larger than the buns. Make into thin, 2 - 3 ounce patties.
Prepare a grill fire to about 350° using hickory or pecan chunks for the best smoke flavor.
Place burger patties over direct fire for about 5 minutes with the grill closed.
Flip the burgers and sprinkle with dry rub, continue to cook the burgers about another 5 minutes or until cooked through.
Top half of the patties with a slice of American cheese.
Place a burger patty on top of each patty with cheese.
Remove from grill.
Toast the buns if desired.
Make the burgers by slathering the bottom buns with burger sauce. Add the lettuce and top with double cheeseburger patties, an onion ring, drizzle with more burger sauce and add the top bun.
Serve immediately.
Store leftover burger patties in a zip top bag or airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3 days.
Reheat burger patties in a covered skillet with 1-2 tablespoons of water over medium heat. Turn patties after a few minutes and continue to cook until heated through.
